SpyCruise Lectures

 

The theme of our SpyCruise® to Hawaii is "Denial, Deception and Illusion" and we'll focus on the espionage technique of using disinformation, deception, disguises and denial of information to keep secrets from being lost. The lectures will be given by SpyCruise professors who are retired intelligence and counterintelligence officers from the CIA, FBI, DOD, RCMP, KGB as well as intelligence authors/historians. Most lectures are supplemented by dynamic multimedia PowerPoint presentations.

EVENT: Introduction to the Concept of Denial and Deception

By SpyCruise Professor David Major

Welcome and introductions

Retired FBI executive and counterintelligence expert David Major will discussion the motivations for both allied and adversarial nations to conduction deception operations, including:

  • Examples of deception in the First Gulf War 1990-1991

  • Points of leverage and tools available for conducting national policy deception operations against the US

  • National security policy formulation process at the White House

  • Understanding intelligence and information flow to the President

EVENT: British Deception Operations Against America, 1940-1942

By SpyCruise Professor Nigel West

Well-known British intelligence author and historian Nigel West gives a lecture on British deception operations against the US. Great Britain was in the war against Germany all by herself and to survive, she needed the help of America. But many Americans were opposed to entering the war (before Pearl Harbor). Learn how British spies in the US were successful in changing this opinion and getting America to provide resources for the battle against the Nazis. West will cover deception and propaganda operations against the US President, Congress, media, journalists, public opinion and opinion polls.

EVENT: Successful Deception Operations Conducted by KGB against the United States during the Cold War (Active Measures in Practice)

By SpyCruise Professors David Major and Oleg Kalugin

David Major and retired KGB Major General Oleg Kalugin discuss some of the deeply held beliefs in Western culture that were in fact deception operations conducted by the former KGB. It will reveal the truth behind the targeting and use by the KGB of journalists, politicians, advocacy groups and the American public.

EVENT: Sun Tzu and the People's Republic of China's Practice of Espionage and Deception

By SpyCruise Professor Dr. Paul Moore

One of the country’s leading Chinese intelligence experts, Dr. Paul Moore, discusses how the words of Sun Tzu affect and guide the Chinese practice of espionage today . After all, Sun Tzu said, “There is nowhere that spies cannot be used.” Dr. Moore will also look at the influence on China’s deception operations. “Therefore, to gain a hundred victories in a hundred battles is not the highest excellence; to subjugate the enemy's army without doing battle is the highest of excellence,” and “all warfare is based on deception,” said Sun Tzu thousands of years ago.

EVENT: The Deception Story Behind the Vietnam War

By SpyCruise Professor Connie Allen

You may or may not be surprised to learn that the Vietnam War was largely won because of a successful strategy of deception used by the North Vietnamese. Counterespionage expert Connie Allen, retired from the US Army, tells of this shocking story that makes you re-think the Vietnam war. She will discuss the deception of the Viet Cong, CIA/SOG operations and the “Lost Commandos”, Hollywood’s unwitting role in the deception, and what “Axis Sally” and “Tokyo Rose” had in common with “Hanoi Jane”.

EVENT: A Practical Demonstration of Deception: The Real CIA Masters of Disguise

You remember the Mission: Impossible TV series with the great theme song and amazing gadgets and disguises. Yet after each episode aired, CIA managers would go to its own technical services people and asked if the tricks and devices on the TV show could really be done. Retired senior CIA technical operations officers Jonna and Tony Mendez, authors of Master of Disguise and Spy Dust, were the real CIA officers who were charged with impossible missions under impossible circumstances yet successfully used their skills to the benefit of our country. This session will discuss how disguise and illusion can be used to change your understanding of the truth.

EVENT: The KGB Deception Operations to Protect CIA Spy Rick Ames and FBI Spy Robert Hanssen

Aldrich “Rick” Ames was a GS-14 who worked for the CIA as a clandestine Case Officer and spied for the KGB from 1985 - 1994. Robert “Bob” Hanssen was a GS-15 who worked for the FBI as Supervisory Special Agent and spied for the KGB from 1985 – 1991 and again from 1999-2001. Both men were senior counterintelligence officers who had access to extraordinary secrets. Both were spying at the same time. Both were highly prized assets of the Soviet/Russian intelligence service and required protection. David Major discusses the different ways the Russians successfully used deception techniques to draw the US away from focusing on Ames and Hanssen. “Definitely, definitely, definitely, definitely--we are always playing deception games,” said former KGB chief Leonid Shebarshin. You will also be introduced to the complexity of counterespionage investigations.
