SpyCruise Lectures
The theme of our SpyCruise® to Hawaii is "Denial, Deception and Illusion" and we'll focus on the espionage technique of using disinformation, deception, disguises and denial of information to keep secrets from being lost. The lectures will be given by SpyCruise professors who are retired intelligence and counterintelligence officers from the CIA, FBI, DOD, RCMP, KGB as well as intelligence authors/historians. Most lectures are supplemented by dynamic multimedia PowerPoint presentations.

You remember the Mission: Impossible TV series with the great theme song and amazing gadgets and disguises. Yet after each episode aired, CIA managers would go to its own technical services people and asked if the tricks and devices on the TV show could really be done. Retired senior CIA technical operations officers Jonna and Tony Mendez, authors of Master of Disguise and Spy Dust, were the real CIA officers who were charged with impossible missions under impossible circumstances yet successfully used their skills to the benefit of our country. This session will discuss how disguise and illusion can be used to change your understanding of the truth.

By SpyCruise Professor David Major Aldrich “Rick” Ames was a GS-14 who worked for the CIA as a clandestine Case Officer and spied for the KGB from 1985 - 1994. Robert “Bob” Hanssen was a GS-15 who worked for the FBI as Supervisory Special Agent and spied for the KGB from 1985 – 1991 and again from 1999-2001. Both men were senior counterintelligence officers who had access to extraordinary secrets. Both were spying at the same time. Both were highly prized assets of the Soviet/Russian intelligence service and required protection. David Major discusses the different ways the Russians successfully used deception techniques to draw the US away from focusing on Ames and Hanssen. “Definitely, definitely, definitely, definitely--we are always playing deception games,” said former KGB chief Leonid Shebarshin. You will also be introduced to the complexity of counterespionage investigations.
