SpyMoscow Background

In June 1997 Dan Mulvenna took a group of historians, writers, journalists, retired intelligence professionals and “Cold War espionage buffs” on a unique Spy Tour in Moscow.

The group was given guided tours of the famous KGB Museum, the Red Army Museum, with its GRU section, and the KGB Border Guards Museum. They were “briefed” on several famous Cold War spy cases, such as the Penkovsky and Ogorodnik cases, by former KGB officers who had intimate knowledge of the cases, and taken to the actual “spy sites/locations” and shown tradecraft artifacts.

Touring Moscow, the group visited such sites as the graves of Kim Philby, the great British spy, and those of the famous “illegals” Rudolph Abel (Willie Fisher), Konon Molody, know to the West as Gordon Lonsdale, and Ramon Mercader, Trotsky’s assassin, among others.

Of course, they also toured the Kremlin, Red Square, Lenin’s Tomb and visited Felix Dzerzhinsky’s famous statute (now in the Sculptures (monument) Park, along with Stalin, but perhaps back in front of KGB Headquarters in Lubyanka Square by the time we get there in May, 2003).

In the evenings they attended receptions and dinner with senior, well known retired KGB officers, such as Lieutenant-General Sergei Kondrashev, the one-time case officer of British spy George Blake and co-author of Battle Ground Berlin, Colonel Vladimir Barkovsky of atomic espionage fame, who successfully ran penetration agents in the Manhattan Project, General V. Dozhdalev the Deputy Chief of the KGB’s “Illegals” Directorate, and Lieutenant-General V. Kirpichenko, the former Deputy Chief of the KGB First Chief Directorate and noted intelligence author.
